René Rexhepi (Redzepi në mediet e huaja), shefi kryesor dhe bashkëthemeluesi i restorantit Noma, me origjinë shqiptare, njoftoi të mërkurën se dha dorëheqjen nga restoranti i tij me famë ndërkombëtare në Kopenhagë pas akuzave se kishte abuzuar fizikisht me stafin e tij.

Dorëheqja e Rexhepit vjen pas një raportimi të New York Times që detajoi akuzat tronditëse për abuzim fizik dhe psikologjik, përfshirë pretendime se ai “ka goditur punonjësit në fytyrë, i ka thumbuar me mjete kuzhine dhe i ka përplasur nëpër mure”.

“Kam vendosur të tërhiqem dhe të lejoj udhëheqësit tanë të jashtëzakonshëm që tani të drejtojnë restorantin në kapitullin e ardhshëm,” shkroi ai në një story në Instagram.

Rexhepi tha se javët e fundit kishin “sjellë vëmendje dhe biseda të rëndësishme rreth restorantit tonë, industrisë dhe udhëheqjes sime të kaluar”, duke shkruar:

“Kam punuar për të qenë një udhëheqës më i mirë dhe Noma ka bërë hapa të mëdhenj për të transformuar kulturën gjatë viteve. E kuptoj që këto ndryshime nuk riparojnë të kaluarën. Një kërkesë faljeje nuk mjafton; unë marr përgjegjësi për veprimet e mia.”

Shefi tha se ekipi i Noma-s do të “vazhdojë së bashku në rezidencën tonë në LA, e cila do të jetë një moment i fuqishëm për të treguar se kanë punuar drejt përmirësimit”.

Rexhepi tha se po jepte dorëheqjen edhe nga bordi i Mad, një organizatë jofitimprurëse të industrisë ushqimore që ai themeloi në vitin 2011. Ai gjithashtu postoi një video ku i kërkonte falje stafit dhe njoftonte largimin e tij.

Njoftimi i tij erdhi pasi American Express dhe Blackbird, një kompani mikpritjeje, ndërprenë lidhjet me Noma para pop-up-it në LA.

Raporti i New York Times mbi abuzimin e tij bazohej në intervista me 35 ish-punonjës dhe përshkruante një “model ndëshkimi fizik” dhe “traumë të qëndrueshme nga shtresa të abuzimit psikologjik, përfshirë intimidimin, turpërimin e trupit dhe talljen publike”. Shefi i kërcënonte se do të bllokonte punonjësit në industrinë e ushqimit, do të deportonte familjet e tyre dhe do të shkarkonte anëtarë të familjes nga punë të tjera, sipas raportit.

René Rexhepi resigns after shocking allegations of physical abuse against staff

René Rexhepi (Redzepi in foreign media), the head chef and co-founder of the Albanian-born Noma restaurant, announced on Wednesday that he resigned from his internationally renowned restaurant in Copenhagen following allegations that he had physically abused his staff.

Rexhepi's resignation comes after a New York Times report that detailed shocking allegations of physical and psychological abuse, including claims that he "struck employees in the face, stabbed them with kitchen utensils and slammed them into walls."

"I have decided to step down and allow our incredible leaders to now lead the restaurant into its next chapter," he wrote in an Instagram story.

Rexhepi said that recent weeks had “brought important attention and conversations about our restaurant, the industry, and my past leadership,” writing:

“I have worked to be a better leader, and Noma has made great strides to transform the culture over the years. I understand that these changes do not fix the past. An apology is not enough; I take responsibility for my actions.”

The boss said the Noma team will "continue together on our LA residency, which will be a powerful moment to show that they have worked towards improvement."

Rexhepi said he was also resigning from the board of Mad, a food industry nonprofit he founded in 2011. He also posted a video apologizing to staff and announcing his departure.

His announcement came after American Express and Blackbird, a hospitality company, cut ties with Noma ahead of the LA pop-up.

The New York Times report on his abuse was based on interviews with 35 former employees and described a “pattern of physical punishment” and “lasting trauma from layers of psychological abuse, including intimidation, body shaming and public ridicule.” The boss threatened to lock employees out of the food industry, deport their families and fire family members from other jobs, according to the report.
